Steam MonitoringThe DCX has been adapted to serve in hostile and harsh steam manholes. The DCX is installed inside a NEMA 6P watertight enclosure and used to communicate real-time temperature and water level data from manholes. Today, these units are being used in New York, where they are mounted in steam trap manholes throughout Manhattan. Readings are passed from the DCX to the utility in intervals of 45 seconds or less, thus minimizing the opportunity for problems. This data is used to prevent steam trap backups and the mishaps associated with them.
Case Study: Con Edison (NYC)GOAL: Prevent steam trap backups and the damage they cause. Remotely monitor steam levels under city streets by communicating temperature and water-level data from manholes. SOLUTION: Direct Connect eXternal (DCX) units were encased in NEMA 6P watertight enclosures and mounted in steam trap manholes throughout Manhattan. RESULTS: SmartSynch’s web application enables readings from DCX units to be displayed every 45 seconds on monitors at the Lower Manhattan steam control center. Technicians know when and where water is accumulating and can dispatch personnel to pump it out of the manhole and prevent backups.
